What is a GTM engineer?
The Harp team ·
A GTM (go-to-market) engineer builds the systems that sales and marketing run on. Where a sales ops role configures tools, a GTM engineer connects them: pulling data from providers, enriching and scoring accounts, routing leads, triggering outreach, and increasingly, wiring AI agents into all of it.
What GTM engineers build
- Account lists from several data providers, enriched and scored.
- Signals that say when an account is worth contacting now.
- Routing that puts the right lead in front of the right seller.
- Outbound sequences and the infrastructure under them.
- AI agents that research, write and act through tools.
The shift to agents
With MCP, a GTM engineer can give an agent such as Claude Code direct access to data, CRM and outreach tools. The engineering moves from building workflows step by step to designing the tools, memory and guardrails an agent works through: an MCP harness.
Questions
Do GTM engineers need to code?
Often a little: scripts, APIs and now agent configuration. Many come from sales ops or growth rather than software engineering.
