Cold email follow-ups

The Harp team ·

Many replies to cold outreach come after the first email, which is why follow-ups matter. A lot of the damage comes from follow-ups too: the one sent to someone who already replied, or the fifth identical nudge. Good follow-ups each add something and stop at the right moment.

Spacing and number

  • Leave a few working days between touches, longer as the sequence goes on.
  • Three to five touches in total is plenty for most outbound.
  • Land each one in the recipient’s working hours, in their timezone.

Make every follow-up add something

  • A different reason to talk, grounded in something true about their company.
  • A short, specific resource rather than "just checking in".
  • A different channel: a LinkedIn connection or message between emails.
  • A clear, easy last touch that makes it fine to say no.

Stop at the first signal

A reply, a bounce or an unsubscribe should stop the sequence immediately, and an out-of-office should pause it rather than count as a reply. In Harp, a reply on either channel stops the sequence before anything else happens.

Questions
